This is a follow-up to my previous note about the influence of T-SQUARE. In this post, I’d like to share how a single comment from my teacher led me to explore music beyond T-SQUARE.

One of the biggest turning points was when a friend from my high school concert band lent me Jamiroquai’s The Return of the Space Cowboy. The first track on the Japanese edition was Just Another Story, and I’ll never forget how stunned I was when I heard it. It had analog synths and Rhodes piano reminiscent of Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, yet the phrasing was fresh and innovative, and the vocals left a deep impression on me.

I returned the CD and immediately went to a local CD shop called Haseichi to buy it for myself. (That shop is now a café.)

That discovery made me realize that there was a genre called Acid Jazz—not just fusion. I became obsessed with it. Honestly, I thought, “This is way more stylish than fusion.” It was also the moment I truly understood what my teacher meant when she said, “You should listen to more kinds of music.”

Later, I borrowed an Acid Jazz compilation album that included Omar’s hit There’s Nothing Like This. Years later, through an agency I was registered with called Renommee, I connected with the German label Tokyo Dawn Records. They were hosting a remix contest for a track called DO WHAT I DO by Positive Flow featuring Omar.

I submitted my remix, and to my surprise, it was officially released by Tokyo Dawn Records. What’s more, Positive Flow re-recorded the string parts based on the MIDI data I had submitted. I remember receiving the demo while commuting on the Kintetsu train to Kyoto Station—and it brought tears to my eyes.

Tokyo Dawn Records is based in Germany and releases music by Future Funk and soul artists from all over the world. Why the label is named “Tokyo Dawn” is still a mystery to me.

My teacher once also said: “Listen to contemporary music.” She didn’t mean current pop trends, but rather what we might call modern classical—more experimental and often challenging to listen to.

So again, I headed to Haseichi and picked up sampler compilations like Catalyst Sampler and ARGO Sampler, which featured selections from contemporary classical labels. Even though each track was just a short excerpt, I was deeply impressed by Michael Nyman’s lesser-known compositions and by the existence of minimalist contemporary music like that of Michael Torke.

As I write this, I realize how much my music has been shaped by both my teacher’s influence and the small CD shop Haseichi that once existed in Kyotanabe.

I’ve compiled a playlist of songs that have influenced me or that I’ve enjoyed recently—feel free to check it out. The artwork uses a photo I took along the Masaka River in Kyotanabe.

その後も吹奏楽部の仲間からAcid JazzのコンピレーションCDを借り、その中にOmarの代表曲 “There’s Nothing Like This” が収録されていました。
