Reference for Year-End Tax Adjustment and Final Tax Return When You Have Income Other Than Salary
Hello, this is Chino Yoshio, a composer quietly working in Kyotanabe, Kyoto. In this post, I’d like to share a brief note on how to handle the year-end tax adjustment and final tax return when, like me, you receive a regular salary from your company but also earn some additional income from creative activities. When I first started, I found this process quite confusing, so I hope this serves as a reference for others in a similar situation.
Year-End Adjustment
Around November, when the company conducts the year-end adjustment, I start by totaling my non-salary income, related expenses, and estimated income for December. In my case, most of my income comes through PayPal, so I export my transaction history as a CSV file and organize it using a spreadsheet such as Excel or Google Sheets. If you have income other than your salary, it’s important to keep in mind that this additional step will be necessary at the year-end adjustment stage.
If Your Income Is in USD
If your income is in USD, I recommend converting it to JPY using the monthly average TTM (Telegraphic Transfer Middle rate) at the end of each month. You can find these TTM values on major bank websites such as MUFG.
Filing the Final Tax Return with freee
For the final tax return, accounting software such as freee can make the process easier. I personally use freee, so here’s how it works for me: In freee, the “Simple Mode” available in the Starter Plan can be used to declare additional income (雑所得 / miscellaneous income). You’ll enter your salary income and your other income separately, and the filing period is typically around February of the following year. For your salary income, enter the information exactly as shown on your withholding slip (gensen chōshū-hyō) in freee. You should receive this slip from your company around January, and it will make the filing process much smoother.
