A Record of My “Relax” Podcast

Hello, I’m Chino Yoshio, a composer based in Kyotanabe, Kyoto.
In this post, I am recording the background of my podcast “Relax,” which I published from 2006 to March 2020.

Purpose

At that time, I felt more strongly than I do now that I wanted to deliver music for free.
Rather than releasing through music distribution services, I chose a podcast format so people could listen easily at no cost.

Video podcast period

From around 2014 to around 2018, BIGQUATTRO—who was my supervisor at my workplace at the time—created and posted video works that included my music.
The tracks “Mt. Fuji” and “Hikone Castle” were composed to match BIGQUATTRO’s videos.

Later, when I worked on adding the podcast to Spotify’s podcast library in 2019, I learned that video podcasts could not be added.
As a result, the video works produced by BIGQUATTRO ended distribution (were taken offline) at that time.
Also, as our ideas about production policy and rights handling no longer aligned, I have not provided music to BIGQUATTRO since 2019.

Notice from Podbean

In March 2020, I received a notice from Podbean (the hosting service) that my podcast had been removed from Spotify’s podcast library.
At that time, I confirmed for the first time—via Spotify’s podcast FAQ—that Spotify’s policy was to provide music content through music distribution services.
To be safe, I also stopped distribution via iTunes Podcasts.

Current status

Today, I have organized the tracks that were released through the “Relax” podcast into a Spotify playlist.
I also continue to use the artwork created by Kyle Stewart for the podcast at that time.

こんにちは、京都・京田辺で作曲活動をしている Chino Yoshio です。この記事では、2006年から2020年3月まで配信していたPodcast「Relax」について、当時の状況を記録としてまとめます。

目的

当時は、現在よりも「無料で音楽を届けたい」という意識が強くありました。配信サービスでのリリースという形よりも、Podcast形式にすることで、より手軽に無料で音楽を聴ける状態を目指していました。

ビデオポッドキャスト

2014年ごろから2018年ごろまで、当時の勤務先の上司であった BIGQUATTRO氏 が、私の楽曲を含む映像作品（ビデオポッドキャスト）を制作し、投稿していました。「Mt. Fuji」「Hikone Castle」は、BIGQUATTRO氏の映像に合わせて制作した楽曲です。

その後、2019年にSpotifyのPodcastライブラリへ追加する作業を行った際、ビデオ形式のポッドキャストは同ライブラリへ追加できないことが分かりました。これに伴い、BIGQUATTRO氏が制作した映像作品は、その時点で配信（公開）を終了しました。
また、制作方針や権利の扱い方などの考え方が一致しなくなったこともあり、2019年以降、BIGQUATTRO氏への楽曲提供は行っていません。

Podbeanから削除の連絡

2020年3月、配信に使用していたサービス Podbean から、SpotifyのPodcastライブラリより私のPodcastが削除された旨の連絡を受けました。
当時、Spotifyの方針として「音楽コンテンツは配信サービスから提供してください」という案内が、Spotify PodcastのFAQに記載されていることを、このタイミングで初めて確認しました。念のため、iTunes Podcastでの配信も停止しました。

現在

Podcast「Relax」で配信していた楽曲は、現在 Spotifyのプレイリストにまとめています。また、当時Podcast用に Kyle Stewart氏 に制作いただいたアートワークは、現在も引き続き使用しています。
