My String Ensemble Setup: Three Violins and Two Violas

Hello, I’m Chino Yoshio, a composer based in Kyotanabe, Kyoto, Japan.

In this post, I would like to make a note of the string ensemble setup I often use in my music: three violins and two violas.

A Practical Choice for Recording

The musician who currently records the string parts for my music plays not only the violin but also the viola.

Since the parts are recorded using multitrack recording, having one musician who can record both violin and viola makes a setup of three violins and two violas very practical for me.

I also often combine the strings with piano. Because the piano already covers the lower register, I do not always need the additional low range of a cello. For this reason, I arrange the string parts while keeping the viola’s lowest note in mind and try to keep the entire arrangement within that range.

バイオリン奏者さんの都合

現在ストリングスの録音をお願いしている奏者さんは、バイオリンだけでなくビオラも演奏されます。

録音は多重録音でお願いしているため、一人の奏者さんがバイオリンとビオラの両方を演奏して録音できるとなると、「バイオリン3、ビオラ2」という構成はとても都合がいいです。

また、私の楽曲ではピアノの音も合わせるため、チェロの音域まで低音を伸ばす必要がない場合も多くあります。そのため、ビオラの最低音を確認しながら、その音域の中に収まるようにアレンジしています。
