My Experience with eA-R Custom-Made Earpieces

Hello, I’m Chino Yoshio, quietly working on music composition in Kyotanabe, Kyoto, Japan.

I recently purchased a pair of custom-made eA-R earpieces, and I wanted to write down some of my impressions after using them.

Taking Ear Impressions

I found a hearing aid shop in Shinsaibashi that was familiar with taking ear impressions specifically for eA-R products, so I had my impressions made there.

In my case, I felt a little pain when the impressions were removed from my ears. I imagine this varies depending on the shape of each person’s ears, but it may be worth keeping in mind if you are considering having ear impressions taken.

Getting the Fit Right

For me, putting the earpieces in properly took a little practice.

After inserting them into my ears, I twist them slightly until they lock into place. They feel very securely fitted inside my ears, although this also creates a slight sense of pressure.

Because of that, I personally would not want to wear them continuously all day. I do not use them for live performances, but judging from how securely they stay in place, I imagine there would be very little chance of the earphones becoming loose or falling out during a performance.

Bass

I use the eA-R earpieces with Sennheiser IE 100 PRO in-ear monitors.

Once they are properly fitted and sealed in my ears, the amount of bass they produce is greater than I had expected.

At the moment, I also use beyerdynamic DT 250 headphones when checking my masters. Interestingly, there are times when the IE 100 PRO with the eA-R earpieces makes it easier for me to notice when I have added too much bass to a mix.

As a result, they have given me another useful monitoring option when checking both mixes and masters.

Treble

With the standard eartips supplied with the IE 100 PRO, I sometimes felt that the treble was slightly emphasized.

After switching to the eA-R earpieces, the bass became much more present, and as a result, the overall balance between the low and high frequencies feels more natural to me.

Rather than the treble itself changing dramatically, my impression is that the improved bass response has changed the overall tonal balance.

Everyone’s Ears Are Different

Everyone’s ears are shaped differently.

Going through the process of having ear impressions taken and trying the eA-R earpieces also made me realize that my own ears have certain characteristics that I had never really thought about before.

Of course, I do not expect my experience to apply to everyone who is considering custom-made earpieces.

These are simply my personal impressions, but I hope they may be useful to someone who is thinking about trying custom earpieces for themselves.

今回は、エアラ（eA-R）のオーダーメイドイヤーピースを購入したので、実際に使ってみた感想を記録しておきたいと思います。

耳型の採取

心斎橋に、エアラ（eA-R）用の耳型採取について詳しい補聴器店があり、そこで耳型を採取してもらいました。

私の場合、耳型を取り出す際に少し痛みを感じました。耳の形などによって個人差はあると思いますが、これから耳型を採取される方は、こうした場合もあるという程度に知っておくとよいかもしれません。

装着のコツ

私の場合、装着には少しコツが必要でした。

耳に入れたあと、少し捻るようにするとしっかり固定されます。耳の中にきちんと収まる感覚があり、その分、若干の圧迫感もあります。

そのため、個人的には一日中ずっと装着していたいという感じではありません。ただ、私はライブ演奏では使用していないものの、この固定感であれば、ライブ中にイヤホンが外れたり落ちたりする可能性もかなり低いのではないかと感じました。

低音

私はSennheiser IE 100 PROに装着して使用しています。

イヤーピースがきちんと耳に固定されると、想像していた以上に低音がしっかり出るようになりました。

現在、マスタリングの確認にはbeyerdynamic DT 250のヘッドホンも使用していますが、エアラを装着したIE 100 PROのほうが、ミックス時に低音を出しすぎていることに気づきやすいと感じる場面もあります。

結果として、ミックスやマスタリングを確認するためのモニター環境の選択肢が一つ増えました。

高音

IE 100 PRO付属のイヤーピースを使用していたときは、高音域がやや強調されて聞こえる印象がありました。

エアラに交換すると低音がしっかり聞こえるようになったためか、高音と低音のバランスが以前より整ったように感じます。

必ずしも高音そのものが大きく変化したというよりは、低音域までしっかり聞こえるようになったことで、全体のバランスが変わったという印象です。

個人差について

耳の形は人それぞれです。

今回、耳型を採取したり、エアラを実際に使ったりするなかで、「自分の耳にはこういう特徴があるのだな」と気づくこともありました。

もちろん、ここに書いた感想が、オーダーメイドイヤーピースを検討しているすべての方に当てはまるとは思いません。

あくまで私個人の使用感ではありますが、購入を検討している方にとって、何かの参考になればと思い記録しておきます。
